Case Elisa: One of the Largest VPP Projects in the Telecom Industry
Gridle is transforming the nationwide network of mobile base stations into a distributed virtual power plant.
Elisa Home Battery Service (in Finnish: Elisa Kotiakku) is a turnkey home battery service designed to help Finnish households take control of their energy use. With a modular battery system, intelligent software, and seamless installation, Kotiakku enables customers to store affordable, renewable electricity and use it when it matters most—cutting costs, increasing energy independence, and contributing to a more resilient grid.
Finland’s energy landscape is changing fast. A third of households now use spot-price electricity contracts, exposing them to volatile prices. At the same time, solar panel adoption is rising, but many homes lack the tools to store and optimize their self-produced energy. Households needed a simple, reliable way to smooth out price spikes, make the most of solar power, and stay powered during outages—all without complex installations or high upfront costs.
Elisa responded with Kotiakku: a smart, AI-powered home battery service offered as a monthly subscription. The system automatically charges when electricity is cheap—either from the grid or solar panels—and discharges when prices peak. It also connects to Elisa’s virtual power plant (VPP), allowing households to earn grid rewards by supporting national energy balancing.
The results speak for themselves:
Savings: Customers have reduced electricity bills by 33–49%
Simplicity: Everything from site survey to installation is handled by Elisa and its partners.
Scalability: After a successful beta in Helsinki, Kotiakku is expanding across Finland.
Satisfaction: With an NPS of 57, customers are embracing the service as a smart, sustainable upgrade to their homes
Elisa Kotiakku is more than a battery—it’s a step toward smarter living and a greener energy future.
